This will benefit those who had linked to this post since fresh monthly rankings will be available at the same url. Unfortunately Blogger does not allow static pages, so the past date (url) of this post will stay. But the content will be updated every month.

Updated on May 29, 2009: Welcome back to our rankings of personal finance (pf) blogs for May 2009 based on traffic data of April 2009. It requires a lot of hard and smart work to figure among the best personal finance blogs. Heartiest congratulations to all those who made it to our list of "Top 100 Personal Finance Blogs." Our next ranking of PF Blogs will be released in August 2009.

As you may have noticed, there are some discrepancies in Quantcast and Compete's results. This may be due to the fact that many sites have not implemented requisite trackers and plugins (details are here). It makes sense to go through with the implementations to make this game an even playing field.

The following tables show traffic rankings of individual and group personal finance blogs respectively based on monthly traffic data (Apr 2009) from corresponding sources.

Lazy Man said...: I'd like to see a rankings by Compete score, which I think is better than Quantcast.

Boston Gal's Open Wallet probably does 5 times the amount of traffic that I do (easily), so I question how good these really are.

I've also never heard of SoundMoneyTips or StockGumShoe, so you can understand my surprise that they are in the top 10.

SoundMoneyTips: Monthly Traffic: 22844

StockGumShoe: Monthly Traffic: 11137

And since Boston Gal's Open Wallet does not have a domain name of its own Compete cannot generate its score!

Overall in our experience so far, Quantcast has been generating reliable data at par with Site Meter and Google Analytics.

I'm pleasantly surprised to get some external objective feedback on how well I am doing and how well personal finance, as a sector, is generally doing.

However, as hinted at by Lazy Man, I think it will take time to discover all the sites that fit into your measured category. If you can do that - there will eventually be less "surprises" hiding out there.

This is a fun list you've put together. I have noticed quite a few sites that are not mentioned. Blueprint for Financial Prosperity, All Financial Matters, Free Money Finance, and Wise Bread are all very popular blogs.

I wonder if Quantcast doesn't have familiarity with many sites? Still, this is a neat thing you've done, and as with any project of this magnitude, it will need a little tweaking.

Lazy Man said...: It looks like the SoundMoneyTips is really part of Seeking Alpha (http://soundmoneytips.com/page/about_us ), and I would claim that violates the "...strictly to personal finance blogs written and managed by a single owner sharing their personal life's experiences." clause.

As for StockGumShoe, I'm really quite surprised by their traffic, but I'm a little skeptical. Compare it with Jim's Bargaineering.com/articles (Blueprint for Financial Prosperity) - http://siteanalytics.compete.com/stockgumshoe.com+bargaineering.com?metric=uv

For my site, Quantcast explicitly says that it has sparse data, which sounds like it knows it has a problem. It also says my audience is heavily female, which would be a complete shock to me. They give a little more information on their data here: http://www.quantcast.com/interpreting-panels.jsp. I don't have Flash on the computer that I'm on so I can't see what heavily female means, but it would be interesting to compare it to iVillage.

I'd suggest using something similar to Text Link Ads Blog Juice Calculator, which factors in 4 or so factors (Technorati, Alexa (though I can replacing this), and some other things that I can't remember right now).

Our apologies for including SoundMoneyTips. In compiling the list we overlooked the fact that it is not a personal finance blog managed by a single person. We shall remove it from the list. We are indebted to you for pointing out this mistake.

BluePrintForFinancialProsperity (BPFFP): We tried Quantcast data for it: it did not have it. Then we tried compete and it brings up data for www.bargaineering.com which is not the blog but a shopping site. The blog is hosted at www.bargaineering.com/articles. So we could not include this blog in the list. But we will add a note to the same effect at the end of the list since it is a popular blog.

Because of the above reason, it would be unfair to compare BPFFB and StockGumShoe based on Compete's data. Besides Compete's data for StockGumShoe is comparable with Quantcast's data.

If quantcast has generated wrong data for your site, we are sorry about it. But it is none of our fault. Quantcast is coming up strongly as one of the most reliable startups in the metrics zone, but they are not perfect yet.

This is the first version of our list created solely on the basis of Quantcast and Google PR data. In future we shall be upgrading our scripts to perhaps include other metrics like Compete. We do not rely on Alexa since its methodology is not correct (in our opinion). Technorati is not on the list since it does not measure traffic. We might create another list based on Technorati's data which will show who is linking the most to whom. But that by itself is not a true measure of a blog's success, more so, since now a days most blogger's form groups and keep linking to its member blogs' articles to increase their Technorati Ranks and Authority.

We thank you for pointing out the issues. We will correct them asap. Looks like quantcast's data has to be taken with a grain of salt. Hopefully we will be able to make our list more mature so that it is more fun.

Lazy Man said...: I understand the reasoning for not counting www.bargaineering.com/articles, but then you can't really count www.getrichslowly.org/blog (GRS). I realize that Quantcast failed for BPFFP and worked for GRS, but that just shows you Quantcast's limitations.

Why include Google PR and exclude Technorati? Google PR is like Technorati in that it measures links and link value and not necessarily traffic.

I'm not saying that Quantcast is particularly wrong about my site, just pointing the flaws in the measuring process.

I didn't mean any disrepect to you for creating this list - it is a very good list. I just want to be of service helping you best measure blogs - even though it's extremely difficult to impossible to do accurately.

Thanks for your feedback :) We included Google's PR because we studied it in detail. It takes into account both the backlinks coming onto a site and its traffic. We ran an experiment where a page had a PR of 4 when the traffic on it was high. Keeping the no. of links pointing to it the same ( i.e. same no. of backlinks), we observed the PR when the traffic to the page decreased. Google's PR dropped to 2. So PR is not solely based on links which is a common misconception. Moreover the search engine traffic of a site is highly dependent on it Page Rank.

In that view Technorati cannot be compared apple to apple with Google's PR. So a list based on Technorati's links will solely measure the amt of links that a site is receiving (within a time frame of last 180 days) and that too only from the sites that Technorati's bots crawls. There are many sites that might be linking to your site but Technorati does not pick them up because their crawler does not reach them. In short, we have observed that Technorati's crawlers have lot of bugs and this is evident by the no. of help requests (in their help forum) from bloggers citing that their blogs are not being crawled even after they have claimed them at Technorati!

Since traffic is the moolah for a modern website we had focussed on traffic for this list. Hopefully we will be able to get some reasonable tools to measure it accurately.

usage kept going up and when I cracked 1 million page views in a month I had to stop with them because they were charging $30 a month. I prefer Google Analytics, which offers similar stats and is free.

FIRE Finance said...: After reading your fresh comments (after re-compilation of the rankings), the responses are:
- we will add the sites (of those of you who mentioned an inclusion in the list) when we compile it again later.
- the sitemeter list has 37 sites since those were the only ones implementing sitemeter in our entire list of pf bloggers! As our database of sites grow the list will grow provided they have implemented sitemeter and made the data public.
- in future we will implement cut off limits for traffic for all the three rankings. The limits are dynamic and will depend on the no. of sites we are ranking.
- Spelling mistakes will be taken care of.

I don't think I get this list very well. Per Quantcast, I should rank about the same as Blogging Away Debt, and I use Sitemeter, so I should also be on that list. How exactly did you search for sites or did you work off a list and then pull back the data?

I'm a little peeved at being overlooked, but I'm sure it's a question of methodology which is why I ask. I also know that my ISP diddled with a file that makes my PR 0, which was at a 5 a while ago. (Trying to fix that now.) So I am guessing that because I have a PR of zero that my site doesn't make the cut?

Thanks for writing to us. We did not get to your site since we did not know about it. We started working off a list (with hundreds of names) of common pf bloggers . But the pf blogosphere has thousands of bloggers!

This was a small exercise on our part to generate some rankings. Neither is it exhaustive nor complete. We are requesting the help of pf bloggers like yourself to help us maintain the list.

From the time we first published the rankings on Sep 4th, many pf bloggers have mentioned their sites and we included them in the second publication of the list on Sep 5th.

Similarly we have added your site to our list and shall include it in our next publication, hopefully a month later.

We cannot publish the list daily since it is time consuming and takes more than 4 to 6 hours to generate all the data. Moreover the data for sitemeter and compete has to be collected manually which is extremely labor intensive. So we thought of publishing an updated list in month or more.

In the meantime if pf bloggers send us the urls of their sites along with their page rinks and links to their sitemeter traffic we can include their sites in the next round of ranking.

Hope you understand and thanks a million for your cooperation.

1. No one metric or system is perfect. Each site (Quantcast et al) has its own premises and definitions of traffic. Further they have their own way of measuring them. Let alone being perfect. I would rely only on their relative merits instead of absolute numbers.

2. It does not make sense to update the list sooner than a month.

3. A reasonable cutoff traffic is desirable for a blog to make it into the list.

4. How about consolidating the 3 tables into one? Do we really need data from all the three sites in the first place?

My 2 cents :)

The sitemeter stats are public and on the site. I checked and wasn't listed by Quantcast so I've added in their javascript as well.

I was getting picked up by compete already and seem to be around 50ish based on the rankings you have listed for other sites.

I would like to suggest here, however, that the amount of traffic to a website or blog is not the only, and may not be the best, way to measure the value of the personal finance content at that website or blog. So much more determines what makes such content relevant to those seeking greater insights into their own financial matters.

I work to differentiate PowerWealth.com from the myriad other personal finance blogs and websites out there by:

1. Focusing on quality posts over quantity of posts -- I don't post until I think it is worthy of the high quality standards I set for myself

2. Introducing new ways of thinking about personal finance -- namely, in ways that you will not find in the mainstream financial media, which many personal finance bloggers seem to be only regurgitating in their blogs, wrongly or rightly

3. Offering insights into the mind and practices of someone who has actually pulled ahead of most Americans financially-speaking -- I'm not another random personal finance blogger who just likes to talk about money; I've used my knowledge and experience to become financially successful

4. Offering insights by an objectively-defined financial expert -- I am a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder; those who know what the charter is will know what it means -- I don't just say I know a lot about financial matters, an independent party has tested my knowledge to a worldwide standard and continues to hold me to that higher, global standard. Few personal finance book authors or Web-based bloggers out there today have elected to hold themselves to the independent, objective standard that the CFA charter provides.

5. Using my real name and photo on my website -- so many bloggers out there today still hide behind pseudonyms and avatars, which is obviously their own prerogative; however, when it comes to making decisions about your money -- a scarce and precious resource -- that you and your family rely on for security and freedom, would you rather rely on "f1nanzWIZ69" for greater insights or someone who reveals their full name and image to you so you know exactly who you are dealing with as you consider the gravity and relevance of their insights?

As you move forward with your rating lists, might I suggest you consider at least one of these kinds of criteria for measuring and evaluating personal finance blogs and websites?

To clarify things, though, I want to add that while many of our writers are professionals (some have financial certifications, some are professional writers, etc), none of them are "staff writers" in the traditional sense.

They don't get paid a salary. Instead, they take home 100% of the advertising revenue generated by their articles. Which, if you think about it, is pretty much how it works for any blogger.

1. This site's data for sitemeter is private.
2. Since it is hosted on blogspot and has .blogspot in its url, so compete cannot generate its data.
3. Quantcast says that it has sparse data for this url and its < 2000.
So we could not rank it.

- The post also has a link to a technical explanation about how PR works and affects your site's position in a Google search. Its perhaps geeky but one has to understand its essence to get a hang of what Google's PR is, how to preserve it and then make it grow to make the most of Google's search traffic.
- Blog Juice Score will give you an idea about a site's technorati rankings. We are not aware of any tool that ranks blogs by their feed counts :). If any of you know about such a tool, please let us all know about it.

We publish raw data of only the sites that make it to the final rankings. That is the reason PTMoney was not in raw data page. However for January we noticed that your traffic has increased considerably, congratulations! Hopefully it would make it to the final rankings this time.

Everyday Finance said...: Love the List. Unfortunately, I was too lazy to sign up for all the measurement tools again last month.

I had over 22,000 visitors last month and I showed as 2K at Quant. So, I finally got around to signing up for all 3 this month.

Hopefully I'll make the rankings this time around for August's results.

1. Since your blog is on blogspot, like ours, Compete traffic data is not available. It gives only for the main domain - blogspot.com.

Lazy Man and Money said...: I think you should just average in a penalty for the sites that don't make the information available. Just take what their overall score is and add three for each piece of information that's missing. You can even keep track of real score and adjusted for penalties score.
FIRE Finance said...: Note: We republished the rankings once again. There were some sites whose sitemeter data had been made public but we had not been notified. Once we manually checked the sites and updated the data, the rankings changed so we redid the list :). Thanks for your patience & cooperation.

That is a neat tip. If the sites comply, penalties would not be necessary. But in the worst case scenario, your advice might work wonders to make the playing field an uniform one.

For some reason I can't get Quantcast to use my regular domain name.
